🪪 Permits & Regulations

Because the Adi Kailash route lies close to the India–China border, special permits are mandatory.

📜 Inner Line Permit (ILP)

  • Where Issued: SDM office in Dharchula, Uttarakhand.
  • When They’re Issued: Usually starting late April/early May each year ahead of the pilgrimage season starting in May.
  • Required Documents:
  • Government-issued photo ID (Aadhar, Passport, Voter ID)
  • Passport-sized photos
  • Medical fitness certificate (recommended or required)
  • Self-declaration forms linked to high-altitude travel safety

These permits are checked at various checkpoints on the route — especially at Dharchula and sometimes at Gunji — so always carry originals and photocopies.

🧭 Best Time to Go

  • May to September is the main yatra window, when roads are generally open and weather is clearer.
  • Snowfall and freezing conditions usually begin about December onward, and the yatra is typically closed from December 1.
  • Monsoon rains (July-August) can occasionally bring landslides and roadblocks, so plan buffer days.

🎒 Travel & Safety Tips

Planning well helps ensure a smooth, safe, and memorable pilgrimage:

🧗‍♂️ Physical Preparation & Acclimatization

  • Gradual acclimatization is essential — especially in Gunji and mid-route villages — to reduce risks of altitude sickness.
  • Start light cardiovascular and trekking fitness a few weeks ahead.

🧥 Packing Essentials

  • Warm clothing layers: thermals, fleece, gloves, woollen caps.
  • Sturdy trekking shoes with strong grip.
  • Sun protection: sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen, lip balm.
  • Altitide medicines and basic first-aid kit.

📍 Connectivity & Money

  • Network coverage is limited above Dharchula — ATMs are only available in larger towns. Carry extra cash.

🛂 Food & Conduct

  • Vegetarian diet is usually provided; alcohol and smoking are discouraged due to high altitude.
  • Respect local culture and environmental rules.

🚐 Travel Options

  • Government-registered vehicles like jeeps and tempo travellers are the safest choice — avoid self-driving in these narrow mountain roads unless you’re very experienced.

🛏️ Accommodation & Logistics

  • Basic guesthouses, homestays, and inn-type lodges are available along the route — particularly in Gunji, Nabi, and the final approach areas.
  • Booking ahead through tour operators or state agencies like KMVN (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) can simplify permits and logistics.
